Jim is a Master Mariner and Solicitor (England & Wales) with over four decades of experience in shipping, Admiralty and marine insurance matters.

Before qualifying as a solicitor, Jim served in the Merchant Navy from 1975 to 1987, sailing on general cargo vessels, LPG carriers, container ships, bulk carriers and offshore supply vessels. He obtained a Master Mariner’s Certificate of Competency and served as Master for five years before pursuing a legal career following his studies at the University of Southampton.

He subsequently practised with leading international shipping law firms, where he spent many years as both solicitor and partner, advising shipowners, charterers, insurers and P&I Clubs on a broad range of shipping, Admiralty and marine insurance disputes.

Jim has particular expertise in marine casualties, including collisions, groundings, salvage, unsafe ports, unseaworthiness and other complex Admiralty matters. He has been involved in a number of significant cases before the English Courts, including The Merwestone and The Sakizaya Kalon, and has been recognised by The Legal 500 as a leading shipping practitioner.

Jim collaborates with Camera & Partners on selected English law, Admiralty, marine casualty and marine insurance matters, bringing his unique combination of legal and operational expertise to complex international shipping disputes.
